Divorce and the school holidays
The long summer school holidays mean a new routine and possible challenges and conflicts for divorced parents who find themselves clashing with their ex even if their term-time arrangements run smoothly.
In this article Richard Buckley, Senior Solicitor from Eaton Smith's family team provides some advice on how to make holiday times easier for everyone.
Plan Ahead
Some couples plan the school holidays at the time of their divorce to avoid the need to discuss it later on. Having these discussions at an early stage can minimise the risk of conflict at a later date. Plan in advance how the holidays will work best for everyone involved, including the additional child care costs and you are more likely to avoid stress and worry during what should be an enjoyable time.
Prioritise your children
The emotions that arise during those early school holiday periods following divorce and separation are similar to those felt when originally discussing arrangements for children during the divorce process. The difference is that you are likely to be handling the situation without the support of a divorce solicitor. You may have to face the reality that your children will be holidaying without you. However, all decisions need to be made in the best interests of the children and seeing their parents getting along will help them enjoy the summer.
Co-operate & communicate
You may not be married any more but you will always be parents and this means putting your children first, which demands co-operation and compromise on both sides. Good communication is essential to successful co-parenting so keep your ex informed of your own holiday arrangements and work commitments as well as taking into consideration theirs. Be respectful of each other as you will both want to spend quality time with the children during the summer holidays. Put your differences aside and, if necessary, take a more business-like approach to the arrangements.
If you do experience difficulties or a lack of cooperation from your ex over school holiday plans it may be necessary to seek the help of a family solicitor.
